Help someone that is having a panic attack
The panic attack signs and symptoms have some resemblance to that of asthma and heart attack.
The attack is sudden and it’s important for you to be able to able to react to it properly. Those having panic attack will complained of short of breath and increase in their heartbeat. Depending on severity, sometimes you can see them sweating and shaking uncontrollably.
When you’re in doubt always seek immediate medical attention.
Though it might sound overreacting, it’s the best move you can make if you didn’t know the health history of this person. He or she could be facing with life threatening situation resulting from other complications and there’s no way for you to know it unless you’re close to this person.
You need to first establish that this person is having a panic attack. Try to find out what is triggering the attack and bring that person away from the source and let her has some rest.
Be mindful that the person is feeling the fear as real and her mind and body are reacting to it. You can help her get through it by trying to calm her down. Use a calming voice and ask the person how you can help her. If this is not the first time she’s having panic attack, chances are she has some techniques that she use to cope her attack.
If the person is having difficulty breathing, you can try to help her get into some relaxed state. If she’s standing, try to get her to sit. Don’t force her but try to do it gently. Ask her to take a deep breath a few times and try to relax. Your intention is trying to get her breathing back to normal.
When you’re trying to help, always reassure her that it’s safe. The attack might be short but some people may have it longer. If you’re faced with this kind of situation, you need to be calm so that you can help guide her through.
Never leave a person having panic attack alone unless there’s somebody that can take care of her. Though the fear might be in her mind only, there’s a slight chance that she can harm herself in this situation.
